Join us for a tour of three homes that Cleveland Restoration Society has been restoring on Newton Avenue near the Cleveland Clinic campus.
The block is lined with bungalows which are decorated with architectural features pulling from colonial and Classical Revival designs that are often found on larger, high-style homes.
These homes are part of an eight-home bequest, a generous gift from the estate of Jerry Maddox, that transferred to CRS in 2021. The three houses on the tour have been recently renovated, maintaining the historical details while also updating for modern comfort and convenience. All are currently available for rent.
The Newton Avenue houses were built by local residential developer, Philip Marquard. In business between 1904 and 1943, Marquard was responsible for many of the houses in the West Park area of Cleveland and Lakewood. The Newton Avenue homes were built in 1910-11, one of the few housing developments built by the company on Cleveland’s east side.
Full porches, fluted and Doric pilasters between second story windows, and leaded glass windows are all details that distinguish the houses on Newton Avenue from those in the surrounding area.
A Cleveland landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Newton Avenue is a unique street in the city. Come hear its history, learn about the builder and see how they’ve been restored for residents to enjoy far into the future.
Tour and parking information will be included in the confirmation email sent before the event.
