A 2023 Celebration of Preservation Award winner, St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1853, the oldest Catholic parish in Akron. Their building, a handsome Romanesque revival style, was completed in 1867.

The interior of the church is adorned with plaster ornamentation, decorative painting, and sculpture, much of which was installed during renovations that took place in 1941. Recently, the congregation raised funds to hire Eikona Studios, crafts persons experienced in decorative art restoration located in Tremont, to refurbish the decorative elements in the sanctuary.

Significant damage to the structural elements of the ornamentation needed to be repaired and the electrical updated. Peeling paint and cracked plaster had to be remedied. Three dimensional ornate motifs were replaced by making moulds and four-foot bas relief stations of the cross were rebuilt in areas and restored. Many of the surfaces were gently cleaned by hand with toothbrushes, removing years of grime.

Eikona Studios took a comprehensive art and design approach to the restoration with the goal of not only repairing the ornamentation but also highlighting the architectural elements inside the space. All of the work was executed meticulously by hand.

Come see why this project was presented with the Outstanding Stewardship Award and the AIA Craftsmanship Award at our Celebration of Preservation Awards in July. Eikona Studios owner and principal Christina Uveges Loya will be on hand to discuss her studio’s work and someone from the parish will speak about the church’s history.

Parking will be available on the lot across the street or in the lot between the church and the school.

5939 Broadway Ave., Cleveland, OH 44127

Come see firsthand how the techniques used to produce stained glass windows today are much the same as in the Middle Ages at our next SNOOP! tour and demonstration at Whitney Stained Glass. The window above is at the Old Stone Church on Public Square in Cleveland. Whitney Stained Glass, committed to quality craftsmanship and customer service, is an affiliate member of Stained Glass Association of America and a member of the American Glass Guild. In addition to restoration work, the studio has also designed and installed numerous original windows for many public and private spaces, including Trinity Cathedral and the Old Stone Church.

Since our last SNOOP! at Whitney Stained Glass in 2008, the company moved to an historic building in Slavic Village. There is a small parking lot adjacent to the building on the corner of Broadway and Engel Avenues. Additional parking is available across the street at the Save A Lot.
