Mid-Century Modern
As we stepped into the twenty-first century, everything mid-century modern or as we affectionately call it, "mid-mod," became new again. From Danish Modern furniture, Russel Wright dinnerware and graphic printed fabrics to ranch houses, television's "Mad Men," and Cleveland's own Breuer Tower, we are slowly learning to appreciate the design nuances of 1950's and 60's.
For the preservation movement, this atmosphere has been a welcome partner in raising awareness about landmark structures designed by both local unknowns to world-class architects that are often threatened with demolition.
These gems of the recent past still have something very valid to say about the exuberance and optimism of postwar American culture. Embraced by a younger generation that sees their essence as a "cool" combination of non-traditional materials and futuristic forms, mid-mod is gaining the value of recognition, preservation and adaptive use.
If you live in Sprawling Ranch or even a postwar Split Level, the following links will help you assess maintenance and design issues for the newest generation of historic properties.
