Sacred Landmarks Assistance Program

The legacy of Cleveland's ecclesiastical architecture is the focus of the Sacred Landmarks Assistance Program, an interdenominational program with a mission to assist congregations in Northeast Ohio with the preservation of their historic properties.

Northeastern Ohio is blessed with hundreds of historically and architecturally significant religious properties. These buildings represent the finest craftsmanship and architectural talent of their day. They reflect and embody the spiritual and cultural traditions of their congregations, whose rich histories are still evident. Over the last few decades, many of these religious properties have suffered from a slow physical deterioration. The reasons are clear - changing congregations, declining revenues, and a lack of financial and technical resources.

St. Theodosius

Overwhelmed by the challenges of maintaining their buildings, performing repairs, and hosting community outreach programs, congregations can turn to the Sacred Landmarks Assistance Program for reliable, impartial technical assistance. The program helps put congregations on the path to better property management.

Technical assistance is available on-site, over the telephone, via e-mail, and through periodic workshops and seminars on topics related to property stewardship. Congregations can request help with a variety of issues, including identifying and prioritizing needed work, finding contractors, and reviewing specifications and bids. Through the Sacred Landmarks resource library, information is available on various subjects, including fund-raising, shared space, accessibility, re-use projects, energy conservation, organs, and stained glass.

Through the Sacred Landmarks Assistance Program, the Cleveland Restoration Society acts as an advocate for the stewards of Greater Cleveland's historically and architecturally significant religious properties. The program sponsors Sacred Landmarks Tours and special events. See the Events Calendar for upcoming events.
