NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR PRESERVATION AWARDS

The Cleveland Restoration Society and AIA Cleveland, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, are seeking nominations for eligible projects to be recognized at the 2008 Celebration of Preservation awards program.  The two organizations have held separate awards programs in previous years with similar goals of recognizing exemplary projects and individuals who have made a significant, positive impact in the revitalization of Northeast Ohio through historic preservation.  2008 marks the first collaborative awards program.

“Our combined efforts will create greater excitement and prestige around the awards program and give the award winners the recognition that they deserve,” said Kathleen Crowther, executive director of the Cleveland Restoration Society, “Through their projects they are preserving the cultural history of our diverse communities, revitalizing our local economy and adding to our quality of life.”  “Many of these projects are completed by individuals who have taken a substantial financial and personal risk to renovate their properties using an historic preservation approach and have become catalysts for others to do the same,” added Mary Helen Hammer, executive director of AIA Cleveland.

Projects must be located within Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Portage, Summit, Medina or Lorain Counties, have been completed according to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation, and be put into service as of February 15, 2008.  Nominations in preservation, renovation, restoration and adaptive use of historic buildings will be considered, as well as, the long-term stewardship of historic properties, organizational accomplishments and individual achievements.  Nominations must be received by 5:00 p.m., February 15, 2008.  Nomination forms are available from both organizations and can be downloaded from www.clevelandrestoration.org or www.aiacleveland.com.  Winners will be announced at the Celebration of Preservation, to be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, during National Preservation Month, at the Ohio Theatre in Playhouse Square.

The Cleveland Restoration Society is the region’s largest non-profit preservation organization and is a Local Partner affiliate of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  Founded in 1972, the Society is dedicated to the preservation of Greater Cleveland’s historic resources.

For almost 150 years, members of The American Institute of Architects have worked with each other and their communities to create more valuable, healthy, secure, and sustainable buildings and cityscapes.  AIA members have access to the right people, knowledge, and tools to create better design, and through such resources and access, they help clients and communities make their visions real.
