RESTORATION SOCIETY HOSTS AFRICAN AMERICAN LANDMARKS EVENT

On Sunday, February 29, 2004 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., the Cleveland Restoration Society and Preservation Resource Center of Northeastern Ohio will host an African American Landmarks Event at Shiloh Baptist Church in celebration of Black History Month. Located in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood, this Neo-Classical church building was designed by architect Harry Cone in 1906 for the Temple B’nai Jeshurun, a conservative Jewish congregation. In 1923, Shiloh, the oldest black Baptist congregation in Cleveland, purchased the building. The Reverend Jewell D. Jones, Sr. will welcome us as we learn about the history of the building and the two congregations that have called it home, enjoy inspirational music from both the Jewish and Christian faiths and explore this architectural treasure. Speakers will include Susan Braham Koletsky, Museum Director, The Temple Tifereth Israel; Dr. Regennia Williams, Professor of History, Cleveland State University; and Dr. Michael Tevesz, Director of the Center for Sacred Landmarks, Cleveland State University. The Western Reserve Historical Society will offer a special exhibit featuring historic photographs of the congregations and the surrounding neighborhood. This free event is sponsored by Sandvick Architects, Inc. and Korfant & Mazzone, Inc. For information and registration, call the Society at (216) 426-1000.

The Cleveland Restoration Society/Preservation Resource Center of Northeastern Ohio is the region’s largest non-profit preservation organization and is a Local Partner affiliate of the National Trust. Founded in 1972, the Society is dedicated to the preservation of Greater Cleveland’s historic resources.
