RESTORATION SOCIETY LIGHTS 130-YEAR OLD STEEPLE
On Friday, September 26th, Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church, 2031 West 30th Street, Cleveland, will celebrate
the lighting of
its newly repaired church steeple. Through participation in the
Society’s Steeple Lighting Program, the congregation received
a $20,000 award to help cover the cost of repairs and lighting
implementation. The award was made possible by the Reingold W.
Erickson Fund of The Cleveland Foundation.
This year, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran
Church celebrates its 150th anniversary, and the illumination
of the steeple is a striking
way to commemorate a new stage in the church’s history. With
lighting in place, the steeple will be a beacon in the community
and give concrete expression to the outreach and mission that takes
place within the walls of the church.
This lighting program beautifies the nighttime
skyline and highlights Cleveland’s religious landmarks, making them visible at night
from the city’s highways. Other Cleveland landmarks that
have completed projects through the Steeple Lighting Program include
Pilgrim Congregational Church on West 14th Street in Tremont and
St. Patrick Catholic Church on Bridge Avenue in Ohio City.
Work on the Trinity steeple included repairing and painting a
metal cornice and repairing wood belfry louvers. The lighting design
uses metal halide fixtures, a white light source that will differentiate
the church from its neighbors. In addition to financial assistance,
the Society provided a conditions survey and free technical assistance.
For more information on the Steeple Lighting Program, contact Daria
Gasparini, Sacred Landmarks Assistance Program, at (216) 426-3118.
The Cleveland Restoration Society is the
region’s largest
non-profit preservation organization and is a Local Partner affiliate
of the National Trust. Founded in 1972, the Society is dedicated
to the preservation of greater Cleveland’s historic resources
