CLEVELAND RESTORATION SOCIETY TO HOST SACRED LANDMARKS EXHIBIT
The Cleveland Restoration Society will
host Plain Dealer photographer Michael S. Levy’s exhibit “Urban Landscapes: Sacred
and Transient” at the Sarah Benedict House, 3751 Prospect
Avenue, from September 25 through January 23, 2004. The Society
will hold an opening reception on Thursday, September 25, 2003
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at which the artist will sign copies
of his recently published book, Cleveland’s Urban Landscape:
The Sacred and the Transient.
The exhibit, which features over 30 color
photographs of Cleveland’s
sacred landmarks, explores the relationship between the city’s
monumental and inspirational religious structures and the trivial
and transient features that comprise the urban landscape. “
These photographs of religious buildings in their neighborhoods
are like geological surveys. They show a layering of time that
you can see in one view,” says the artist. “The photographs
freeze time for one moment.”
The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. Exhibit
hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To RSVP
for the reception and for more information call the Society at
(216) 426-1000. Please RSVP by September 18, 2003. The exhibit
is made possible through partnership with The Center for Sacred
Landmarks, Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland
State University.
The Cleveland Restoration Society is the
region’s largest
non-profit preservation organization and is a Local Partner affiliate
of the National Trust. Founded in 1972, the Society is dedicated
to the preservation of greater Cleveland’s historic resources.
