The Sarah Benedict House is a rare survivor of a fashionable neighborhood that included “Millionaires Row” on Euclid Avenue. The Queen-Anne-inspired house was built in 1883 by Sarah Rathbone Benedict, widow of the publisher of the Cleveland Herald and a prominent citizen in Cleveland’s social circles. Cleveland Restoration Society founder Dr. Maxine Goodman Levin gifted the house to the Society in 1997. The house was carefully restored and rehabilitated to become the Society’s headquarters.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the meticulously restored Sarah Benedict House and its beautifully landscaped garden are available for many types of events, from business meetings to weddings, cocktail receptions to formal dinners. Its central location in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood and its historic charm make the house ideal for your next event.

Four formal rooms and an elegant grand staircase on the mansion’s first floor provide intimate meeting spaces for events of up to 100 people. Although the interior spaces retain their historic charm, the house is completely updated with modern amenities. A catering kitchen, central air conditioning and elevator make the building comfortable and accessible.

The Volunteers’ Garden, a dramatic complement to the mansion, can accommodate additional guests. Plants and flowers from a typical 1880s garden are beautifully combined with elements of contemporary art.

Volunteers' Garden

The granite paved upper level is set off from the grassy lawn below by a magnificent stone fireplace fountain, where jets of water mimic flames and cascade down a stone staircase. An ornamental iron fence and trellis enclosure create the feeling of an outdoor room.
